There are several different types of body piercings, mostly depending on the location. The most common are ear, oral, nasal, and abdominal piercings. Genital and surface piercings are less popular, but are prevalent in certain cultures and age groups. Different kinds of piercing supplies are used for different kinds of piercings. Ear piercings will include any piercings of the ear, whether a single hole, a scaffold piercing, or a weaved one. A scaffold is comprised of two holes in the ear connected with one piece of jewelry, usually a barbell.

Many cultures pierce a young girl’s ears shortly after birth, although these types of body piercings are considered gender neutral. Oral types of body piercings typically include adornment of the lip, tongue, cheek, or the area between the lip and the chin, referred to as a labret. While nearly any type of piercing jewelry can be used in oral piercings, the most popular are barbells for the tongue and studs or small hoops for the lip, cheek, and labret. In some cultures, especially African tribes, oral piercings are very common and considered a mark of beauty.

Do you remember the Lindsay Lohan version of ‘The Parent Trap’? In the film Lohan played twin sisters who had been separated since birth but reunited at summer camp. They decide to switch places so each twin can get to know the parent they hadn’t previously lived with.

One of the obstacles in the movie that one twin had pierced ears while the other didn’t. Both twins had to have pierced ears to make the switch believable, so they concocted a DIY way to get the job done. Obviously, what works in the movies isn’t great for real life, so if you do decide to do the deed yourself, make sure you invest in self piercing kits.

So you’ve finally decided to fulfil that body piercing that you’ve always wanted. But before doing that, you may want to consider pondering the following:

  • Decide on which part of your body you want to be pierced. Keep in mind that body piercing is not that easy to reverse once it has been done.
  • Think long-term social or professional fallout for visible piercings.
  • Make sure that you can handle the pain that comes while getting pierced
  • Have your body piercing done by a professional and check if sanitized body piercing tools are to be used
  • Know the proper after-care regime after the piercing is done

The use of kits in doing things has been very popular for a number of reasons. First and foremost is that these kits usually contain everything that you will need to do your project. If you want to pierce your eyebrow, then it is advisable to purchase an eyebrow piercing kit. Specially if you are a beginner, this kit will include everything you need for a successful eyebrow piercing adventure.

Your eyebrow piercing kit should include a needle, gloves, sterile body jewelry and maybe even forceps. These materials would enable you to pierce your own body part and make sure that you do it the right way. Just a reminder, if you are unsure of what you are doing, it is still safer to have it done by a professional body piercer. The money you save may not be worth it if your piercing becomes infected. You can just buy your kit and pay for the labor cost.
